advice for family cooks

To all home cooks on Thanksgiving US: remember my mom's technique. She was a pretty awful cook, and when we complained, she said:

"I LIKE IT THAT WAY"

This is how I ended up needing my pot roast really burned. But it's a good approach. Underdone carrots, charred turkey leg, lumpy potatoes? "I like it that way."

You are welcome!

nearly done outside. enjoying the break

Yes, I do love to garden (except when I don't, lol!) But it's nice that all I have left to do at this point is deal with leaves two more times, pick up any branches that fall in ice storms, and enjoy the bounty that I've created. Here's a page from my next year's garden journal, decorated with stickers and washi tape. And after that, chicken stir fry with onions, peppers, fall broccoli, cashews, and a big outer napa cabbage leaf. Wonderful!

Nearly the equinox

A pumpkin on the vine, and today's harvest. Ground cherries, tomatoes, tomatillos, peppers, and one okra (what does one do with one okra?!?)

breakfasts

I'm still moderately busy harvesting, preserving, and cooking a couple of times per day. But then the food tastes really good, so it's worth the effort. (and in January and February, I'll be thrilled at eating what I preserved). Yesterday while watching a video, I husked ground cherries, and this morning made some ground cherry muffins.

Day later: home-grown herbs whirred in sour cream on top of eggs, plus cherry tomatoes:

As of tomorrow, I'm running to get free mulch every morning, coming home, spreading it where I've torn out plants, and piling it up to cover the beds in winter after I tear out other plants. I have a load of wood chips on order at several places, but so far, no chips have appeared in my driveway. That'll be a big autumn project. After I've retrieved mulch, I need to do about 90 minutes of weeding every day for a week to catch up on that.

Other tasks: saved some strawberry runners that I rooted in potting mix, and need to get those in the "forever homes," as well as some perennial flowers I started (possibly too late, but that depends on when the first frost comes.) One more batch of tomatoes is in the freezer and I need to can those, but that can wait until a hot or cold or rainy day.

Weather has not been kind to me this year! However, I'm getting food, though I have weeds galore at this point (and a lawn to mow tomorrow). Here's some of what's up:

Oh my. I've been busy out there. Mowing, weeding a lot, planting, and so on. I'm nearly ready to harvest spinach and lettuce daily for salads. Here are some shots:

bagged potatoes. 150 more in ground
